Emily Vargas

My work explores themes of identity and the dream world. Sometimes I work backwards to create dreams from sites that are mundane and familiar, such as a landscape or architectural structures, and reimagine them as too fragmented and vivid for reality.

I believe that it is important to work with what I already have at my disposal, so I often create work around something that I've found. I especially love working with things that have a history and can be reused, like old clothing, packaging, broken items, and personal keepsakes. I enjoy switching back and forth between a variety of mediums and processes because it allows me to feel unrestricted creatively and rewards me with fresh discoveries about how different materials interact.
